Hazel - Voices of the Covenant - British / Greek Keybearer

Hazel is a pseudonymous British-Greek Keybearer of the Covenant of Hekate, based in London. She describes herself as a Hellenic Pagan witch, mermaid, Hermeticist, and Andromedan and Sirian starseed, with a spiritual memory of a past life in Atlantis devoted to Hermes Trismegistus.

Hazel joined the Covenant of Hekate in 2011 and subsequently became both a Torchbearer and Keybearer. She is a prominent advocate for the oceanic path of Hekate Enalia, Hekate “of the Sea”, and has devoted considerable work to exploring the goddess’s connections with the ocean, coastlines, maritime journeys and emotional depth. She also encourages the development of emotional intelligence as an important part of spiritual practice.

Her Torchbearer project focused on collecting representations of Hekate in popular culture. This work developed into a substantial resource documenting the goddess’s continuing presence in literature, film, television, art and other forms of twenty-first-century culture. Hazel has also contributed numerous articles to the Covenant of Hekate, including work on oceanic devotion and The Goddess Hekate in Popular Culture.

1. When did you first join the Covenant of Hekate, and what inspired you to become

part of it?

I was looking for the community! I had been in various pagan circles, and I found that

they weren’t really a right fit. This might have been because I was a student and my

interest in Hecate was also affecting my personal development and transformation.

The people I met in pagan circles just wanted to drink loads and talk about mind-

numbing subjects. I felt like I wanted something more intense, and the

CoH has certainly given me that. Finding that community to talk about in-depth

esoteric subjects has been great!

2. What first drew you to Hekate, and how has that initial connection developed over

time?

I discovered Hecate through a book in the book series Night World by L.J Smith, and

it was her association with witchcraft that drew me in. So in the first instance, it was

about magic. But over time it developed into transformation: Every so often I would

think about how much I changed, and what lessons I learnt. These days it has

become about finding my spiritual purpose, and understanding my past lives on

earth and elsewhere, and placing all of that into the bigger picture of what is

happening cosmically.

3. What led you to become a Torchbearer or Keybearer within the Covenant?

It was a calling to give back. A lot of people develop wisdom and gifts once they go

through a difficult period in their life (which I’ve noticed is somewhat an initiation for

Hecate devotees!). So after my difficult path, I got to a point where I very specifically

wanted to share my experience of the Oceanic Path.

4. How do you understand your role as a Torchbearer or Keybearer today?

Things have changed very recently for me when I awakened in 2024, which you can

read about in Ascension 2025. My past lives have caught up with me, and I

discovered my spiritual purpose! I know I’m here to help people awaken, but also

keep that dedication to the Oceanic Path and emotional intelligence. I can now

combine it to help others as a Torchbearer and Keybearer.

5. Has your understanding of Hekate changed since joining the Covenant? If so, what

has shifted?

My understanding of Hecate hasn’t changed since I joined. The biggest change was

before I joined, which was that Hecate is more than a Goddess of witchcraft and

magic. She is a spiritual, psychological, and transformational Goddess. She changes

you deeply on the inside, and she oversees your spiritual evolution so that you are not just living your best life, but that you develop the knowledge and gifts that you need to help others on their journey.

6. Which name, title, symbol or image of Hekate is most meaningful to you, and why?

Her oceanic aspect: Hecate Einalian. Back in 2005 I found myself at a crossroads; I

had built a foundation of self-knowledge and self-awareness, and felt like I sorted

out my “earth/ home” aspects. I asked Hecate to show me my new path, and a

dream from her clearly indicated the Water Path (relationships, emotions). This

involved something deeper and more advanced for me; the Oceanic Path. This

ultimately led me to become a mermaid, and shaped my interest in emotional

intelligence, which transformed my life in very dramatic ways! From Hecate Einalian,

I had the biggest improvements in all areas of my life, and that is why it is the most

meaningful.

7. How does your devotion to Hekate shape your personal work, practice or service?

My devotion to Hecate is very much shaped by the transformation of the self as I see her

as a deity of change, and this inspires my personal development. In turn, this has led

me to encourage others to engage in their own personal development. In terms of

the CoH, I do this by advocating for the oceanic path. Apart from being rewarding to

a person, when everyone engages in their development (especially their emotional

intelligence), I strongly believe it would lead to a better society.

8. What role does community play in your Hekatean path?

I strongly believe that we are guided to one another to learn from each other in

some form. Sometimes Hecate leads us to people who help us willingly or even

unknowingly! And I’m pretty sure Hecate wants that to happen. So community is

important to make that happen.

9. How do you balance personal experience, devotion and historical sources in your

work with Hekate?

By knowing that Hecate appears to her devotee in the way that her devotee needs!

She clearly tailors her support for her devotees, and knows that one-size does not

fits all. This means that sometimes she will appear in a traditional way that is based

on historical sources, or in a completely unique way that serves her devotee.

10. What do you feel is most often misunderstood about Hekate in modern Pagan or

magical communities?

That Hecate isn’t just a Goddess of magic or witchcraft. She inspires and sometimes

forces a devotee to do deep and uncomfortable personal work. I don’t mean, just

recognise you feel an emotion, and go and do a self-care act like take a bath that

makes a person think “oh that’s nice”. I mean she encourages and leads people to

objectively, and harshly about themselves that leads to their own self-awareness.

She often leads a person down an extremely tough path that could take years for

someone to dig out of. But once they are out, the rewards and bounty are immense!

11. Is there a Hekatean practice, prayer, ritual or observance that has become

especially important to you?

Lamnas! This festival in 2000 marked a profound change in me and in my

development where I decided to become more self-aware, understand my past and

myself; this is where my earth path originated. I also decided to take control and

stop seeing myself as a passive recipient that things happened to. Each time I have

had something huge in my life happen, I always use Lamnas to reflect back on how

I’ve changed, and appreciate the “harvest” that I have gained from those changes.

12. Is there any Hekate-related work, project, group, writing, art, ritual or service you

would like to share with readers?

It isn’t oceanic, but I am particularly proud of my research project Hecate in Popular

Culture. I put in a lot of time and effort into that!

13. What advice would you offer to someone who is just beginning their path with

Hekate?

Be emotionally ready for what Hecate will bring, and do the work! She brings to light

all the raw unfiltered dark stuff, and most people just repress it, or work on it about

it for a week and then forget it. Working through issues that Hecate brings is a long-

term project.
