COH Protection Project – Introduction to our Work

With this first post, we would like to start a blog on our “COH protection group”.

As some of you may know, a Torchbearer bootcamp for devotees took place at the Covenant of Hekate this year. This beautiful event initiated several working groups – on healing, meditation, social media and protection. The groups can be joined on request by any COH member on our website (www.hekatecovenant.com/groups). Our “COH Protection Project” was founded by Arie, Tamrha, Diana, Angela, and me.

What is protection?

When you think about it, it is actually quite complex. There are indirect / passive forms of protection, such as locking your door every night to secure your home when there is no direct threat. On the other hand, direct protection is sometimes needed too, when there is an actual defined threat to you or your loved ones. Different situations also require different kinds of protection: If you are going for a walk in the snow, you wear warm clothes and appropriate boots; if you are working with dangerous chemicals, you wear protective gloves.

For magickal work it is pretty much the same. You want to establish a basic level of protection for your home, starting with regular hygiene of your shrines, altars, and of course yourself. Then, you could use protective items for your home or your work place, as well as for your loved ones and yourself. You can cast protective spells as needed. Not only for your home, but also for your magickal work. Like casting a circle or wearing an amulet. There are many items and entities you could work with, such as protective stones, plants, local spirits and more. Protection can be as simple as it is complex.

How is this project related to Hekate?

One of Hekate's most prominent roles is that of a guardian of the crossroads. In ancient times, crossroads were seen as liminal spaces, places of transition, where the boundaries between the mundane and the supernatural were particularly thin. Hekate, as the goddess of these thresholds, was believed to offer protection to travelers as well as those who found themselves at crucial moments in their life. People would leave offerings at the crossroads, seeking Her guidance and protection on their journeys, both physical and spiritual.

Hekate's association with the night further emphasizes Her protective qualities. She is often depicted holding torches, symbolizing Her ability to light the way through the darkness and illuminate hidden dangers.

Hekate's role as a protector also extends to the home and family. Small shrines to Hekate were often placed in doorways to protect the household from external threats. These shrines served as a constant reminder of Her protective presence and Her vigilance over the safety of the home and its inhabitants.

Hekate's protective functions are not only about defending against external threats, but also about guiding and empowering individuals. She is a goddess of wisdom and transformation, helping those who invoke her to navigate through life's challenges and transitions. By offering Her protection, Hekate provides the strength and courage needed to face difficulties and to emerge stronger and wiser.

Why a project on protection?

The aim of our project is to research, learn, test and share methods of magickal and devotional protection that are in line with the ethics and virtues of the Covenant of Hekate.

Hekate is the Goddess of magick, and as Her devotees we naturally come into contact with the magickal world. This can be a wonderful experience. However, as in all other areas of life, we should take the necessary precautions, especially when we start to go deeper into it (e.g. when we want to become torchbearers).

That is why we created the COH protection group. For ourselves, for all other COH members, and for anyone else who is interested. After testing the methods that we have researched and/or developed, we will share them on the COH website.

If you are a COH member and are interested in becoming part of this project, you are invited to join our group on the website (www.hekatecovenant.com/group/tb-course-protection-project).

We hope you enjoyed this introduction to our project!

May all of you be blessed and protected by our Goddess Hekate!
