The Stories of the Covenant

Welcome to Stories of the Covenant. This project aims to share the experiences, insights, and wisdom of the members of the Covenant of Hekate, an international community dedicated to the goddess Hekate and her mysteries.

My name is Rev. Renee Sosanna Olson, and I am honored to serve as the Keybearer and Scriba for this project. As the Keybearer, I am responsible for safeguarding and facilitating communication and collaboration among the members of the Covenant. As the Scriba, I have the privilege of collecting and publishing the stories of our members, who generously share their journeys with Hekate and her companions.

In this project, you will find various stories that reflect our community's diversity and richness. Some stories are original creations inspired by Hekate and her lore. Some stories are submissions from members who reveal their challenges, achievements, and transformations with Hekate’s guidance. Some stories are historical accounts documenting the evolution and development of our Covenant and its practices.

These stories are meant to inspire, educate and connect us with Hekate. They are also meant to be shared with the world as a testimony of our devotion and dedication to the goddess of crossroads, magic, and liminality. Therefore, by submitting your story to this project, you agree to have it published on our website, newsletter, and other publications, where it will be accessible to anyone interested in learning more about Hekate and her followers.

Now, please join me on a journey of inspiration and dedication as we explore the world of the Devotees of Hekate.

Hail Hekate!

Hazel

Meet Hazel, a long-time devotee of Hekate and a member of the Covenant of Hekate. Hazel has been following Hekate for 22 years, and she tells us how she discovered Hekate through a fictional book, works with her companion deity Hermes, and becomes a mermaid with Hekate’s help.

Hazel’s first introduction to Hekate was when she was a teenager living in Greece in the late 90s. She read Night World by L.J. Smith, which featured Hekate as a witchcraft and dark goddess. Hazel was intrigued by Hekate’s power and mystery and decided to learn more about her. “I was curious about her as a witchcraft and dark goddess. But of course, with time, I came to realise she is more than that!” Hazel says.

Hazel soon discovered that Hekate is a multifaceted goddess with many aspects and roles. She says that Hekate is the goddess of the moon, magic, crossroads, liminality, the ocean, the underworld, the heavens, and salvation. Hazel says that Hekate helps her navigate different realms and levels of existence, transcend boundaries and limitations, and achieve personal growth and transformation.

Hazel also follows Hermes, the god of the sun, communication, travel, and commerce. She says that she devoted herself to Hermes a few years ago, and Hekate supported her decision. She says that Hekate and Hermes have a close relationship, as they are both psychopomps, guides of souls, and patrons of magic and theurgy. Hazel says that she dedicated herself to Hermes Trismegistus, the thrice-great Hermes, associated with alchemy, astrology, and philosophy. She says that Hermes Trismegistus works well with Hekate’s Soteira or Saviour aspect, as they aim to help humans ascend to higher levels of being. “Hekate and Hermes complement each other. They are both powerful and radiant, but they also have different aspects and qualities. I feel that they help me to harmonize my energies and align myself with nature's natural cycles,” Hazel says.

Hazel joined the Covenant of Hekate about four years ago, and she says that it has been a very positive experience for her. She says that she has found a way to contribute to the community of Hekate devotees, particularly via Hekate’s oceanic aspect, Einalian. She says that she has made friends, tapped into new resources, connected with the community, and received guidance through them. “The Covenant is a supportive and respectful community. We all have different backgrounds, paths, and practices but share a common bond with Hekate. We celebrate her together, we honor her together, we grow together,” Hazel says.

Hazel says that Hekate has impacted her life in many ways. She says that Hekate led her to her best friend and to the love of her life. She says that Hekate’s Einalian aspect led her to dramatically increase her emotional intelligence, which has improved her relationships and her emotional health. She says Hekate gave her signs in dark times, giving her faith and hope. And she says that just by being Hekate, her symbolism inspires her towards personal growth and positive transformation, which has changed her. “She changes everything,” Hazel says.

One of the most remarkable changes that Hazel experienced was becoming a mermaid. Hazel says she has always loved the ocean and its creatures, especially mermaids. She says that she discovered that real-life mermaids do freediving and wear tails made of monofins and swimmable fabric. She says she thought she could only become one once she moved to a new city where things would be more available. But to her surprise, she found a mermaid instructor in the Yorkshire city where she lived. She says that this led her to become a mermaid herself in 2018. Hazel says being a mermaid is fun, beautiful, and meaningful for her spiritual path. She says that mermaids represent the epitome of high emotional intelligence, which she has been working on for years with Hekate’s help. She says that emotional intelligence is the ability to have self-awareness about oneself and one’s emotions and how to deal with them healthily. She says that applying these principles in her life has improved her emotional health and relationships with others. She says that being a mermaid also connects her with Hekate’s oceanic aspect Einalian who rules over the waters of the world and the emotions of humans. Hazel says that she believes Hekate made all of this happen for her and is grateful for her guidance and blessings. “I truly believe that Hekate made all of this happen herself! By applying these new watery principles in my life, I became a mermaid with Hekate’s help,” Hazel says.

Hazel is one of the many stories we collected for our project, Stories of the Covenant of Hekate. Come back and explore our diversity and dedication to the goddess.

Hail Hekate!

Stacy

Meet Stacy, a devoted follower of Hekate and a member of the Covenant of Hekate. Stacy has been a devotee for about ten years, and she shares with us how she came to know Hekate, how she works with her companion deity Helios, and how she benefits from being part of the Covenant.

Stacy’s first encounter with Hekate was during a reiki attunement, energy healing and spiritual awakening. She says that Hekate showed herself to her in a vision, and she felt an instant connection with the goddess. “She was very powerful and beautiful, and she had this aura of wisdom and mystery. I knew she was calling me to work with her,” Stacy recalls.

Since then, Stacy has been developing a close relationship with Hekate, honoring her as the goddess of the moon, magic, crossroads, and liminality. She says that Hekate helps her to see things from different perspectives, to make wise choices, and to focus on what matters in her life. “She keeps me on the right path. She guides me on what is worth my time and energy and what is not. She also teaches me to embrace change and to trust my intuition,” Stacy explains.

Stacy also follows Helios, the god of the sun, whom she considers a companion deity to Hekate. She says she works with polarity, balancing the energies of the moon and the sun, the dark and the light, the feminine and the masculine. “Hekate and Helios complement each other. They are both powerful and radiant, but they also have different aspects and qualities. I feel that they help me to harmonize my energies and to align myself with the natural cycles of nature,” Stacy says.

Stacy joined the Covenant of Hekate about ten years ago, and she says that it has been a wonderful experience for her. She says that she has met some great people through the Covenant, some of whom have become like family to her. She also says that she has learned a lot from the members, who share their knowledge, experiences, and insights with each other. “The Covenant is a supportive and respectful community. We all have different backgrounds, paths, and practices but share a common bond with Hekate. We celebrate her together, we honor her together, we grow together,” Stacy says.

Stacy is one of the many stories that we have collected for our project, Stories of the Covenant of Hekate.

Hail Hekate!

Catherine

Catherine Archer is a devotee of Hekate, the ancient Greek goddess of magic, crossroads, and the underworld. She has been following Hekate since 2018 after having a powerful and personal encounter with Her at her altar. She shared her story and insights with us in this interview.

Catherine grew up with a pagan interest but felt dissatisfied with the concept of the triple goddess. She wanted to connect with one Goddess who was more than an archetype and who could encompass all aspects of life and death. She was drawn to Hekate’s symbols, such as the crossroads, the liminal spaces, and the keys to open doors and pass through thresholds. She said:

“One night, as I meditated at my altar, I had a vivid, deeply personal encounter with Her. In the darkness of my home, lit only by two flickering candles, She was the first time a goddess appeared directly to me. She looked me straight, and I knew I was Hers. She saw me for who I am, a part of Her and an agent for Her. I was compelled to follow Her and have felt an intense connection with Her ever since.”

Catherine does not follow any companion deities, as she believes in Hekate Soteira as the Cosmic World Soul. She explained:

“There is only Her, and we are of Her. She is the source of all existence, the animating force of the universe, and the divine spark in every living being. She is everything and nothing, light and dark, life and death.”

As a member of  Covenant of Hekate, an international community of devotees who honor Hekate in various ways, she appreciates the space they have to connect, learn, study, and grow together. She especially enjoyed the study group for Hekate Soteira, where they explored Hekate’s role as the World Soul in ancient texts and modern interpretations. She also loves the rituals that Sorita d’Este, the founder of the Covenant, has live-streamed and invited them to attend.

Catherine said that Hekate has impacted her life in many ways. She said:

“She fills me and my life with a fire and color that is indescribable. She reminds me that we are all connected and live united as a collective entity designed to perpetuate Her existence, and for that reason it is invaluable to thrive and lead lives of fulfillment. In this way we live for Her, we can serve Her and honor Her.”

She also values Hekate’s role as a protector and comforter of the marginalized, oppressed, and hopeless. She said:

“She is there for the lost and the hopeless, and those who have no one else. No matter what we lose, we are still pieces of Hekate, and we will always have Her.”

Catherine experiences Hekate personally when she meditates at her altar. She said:

“When I do, the air changes and the visions are strong in my mind’s eye, and I see Her and feel Her there.”

She also shared that Hekate was a comfort and guide for her through many transitions in her life, including when she became a mother.

Catherine is one of many devotees who have found a deep connection with Hekate Soteira. She hopes that by sharing her story, she can inspire others to explore this aspect of Hekate and discover their relationship with Her.
